                    OCTOBER - Grade 11
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Juniors -- Make sure that you have registered for the PSAT.
Familiarize yourself with the format of the questions in both Verbal
and Math sections. Take the test in early October, and wait four to
six weeks to receive your scores. Although top scorers will be in
the running for letters of commendation and semi-finalist or
finalist status from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation,
most juniors merely want to see the results of their first "serious"
standardized test. Use the information your results give you. If
there's a problem, fix it. Find a tutor or a study program and get
busy. The next time is "for real". If you took the PLAN in your
sophomore year in preparation for the ACT, you still have time to
register for the December ACT.

The nights are getting longer, but your time is getting shorter.
This is the last complete year you will be able to show the
colleges. Do your best work in class, in sports, and in all
extracurricular activities. If you are in charge of your admissions
process, you can choose your college. Otherwise you will have to go
to the college that chooses you.

                    OCTOBER - Grade 12
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Seniors -- Now that you have enjoyed a month of senior status, it's
time to get serious about the college application process. You
should already have a list of schools which interest you and a
collection of catalogs. Only one word will help you now -- ORGANIZE.
Sort your application materials in an expandable folder arranged by
school names. Keep all the information sent from each school in its
own compartment. If it looks as though you may eventually need a
dumpster in your driveway for all the paper you are accumulating,
you are probably considering too many colleges.

Call your friends who are away at college. Try to arrange an over-
night visit. If you need special services, call the office which
would provide your support and ask specific questions about their
programs. Do your research. Don't make the mistake of assuming that
the college you like can provide the accommodations you need. Choose
the high school teachers you would like to ask for recommendations.
Ask them if they will do the honors. Bring stamped, addressed
envelopes and your resume, and send each teacher who agrees a
thank-you note or small gift. Don't wait until the day before your
applications are due. Remember, teachers are people too and would
appreciate some lead time.

Have you seen the Web Sites for the colleges which interest you?
Check out the EDUFAX Resources page for links to the web pages and
admissions offices of ALL (yes ALL!) the colleges in the USA, at:
Check it out - college links.
You can ask specific questions through their admissions e-mail. "Do
you have an Ultimate Frisbee Team?" or "Is there an opening for a
tuba in your marching band?" or "Are freshmen allowed to take
Neuropsychology 411?" You can even ask less exciting but equally
important things like "Do dorm beds require extra-long sheets?"
Cyberspace is full of information. Grab some.

If you are planning another delightful encounter with the SAT I/II
or ACT, make sure your registration is set. Spend some time
preparing. The life you save could be your own!
