90% of students designated as National Merit Semi-Finalists advance to Finalist status. What eliminates the remaining 10%? If it is a low SAT score, then what constitutes a low SAT score ?

Answer #79:

SAT scores are the least important component in choosing National Merit Finalists, since the students have already been considered in the pre-selection process. The essay is of paramount importance. All facets, however, of the candidacy are explored.
That is why this is considered such a prestigious award!
