The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in SAT/PSAT/ACT.....

Question #34:
  • My PSAT scores are Verbal=56, Math=65. What would the SAT I equivalent scores be? (courtesy Catherine Shaver, Augusta State University)
Answer #34:
  • PSAT scores are based on a continuum of 20 to 80 points, and SAT scores are based on a continuum from 200 to 800 points. Just multiply by 10 to see how a PSAT score can approximate an SAT score. Using this method, a PSAT Verbal of 56 would be equivalent to 560 on the SAT. There is usually a natural increase of about 50 points in both verbal and math from sophomore to junior year, and again from junior to late junior or early senior year. Even without preparation, these advances occur simply because the student's base of knowledge has grown (hopefully :-)).
The SAT now acknowledges that preparing for these tests is helpful. A combined PSAT score of 1210 (560V and 650M ) is an excellent start. It would not be unlikely to see this composite score rise to the 1300's, facilitating consideration of a wide range of highly competitive colleges.
EDUFAX provides Verbal Test Prep Tutorials (PSAT/SAT I/SAT II/ACT).

Q.#77 : In FAQ:34 you state that the PSAT score can be converted to the SAT score by multiplying the PSAT score by 10. However, in FAQ:54 you also state that there is no conversion table...Please clarify.
Q.#119 : My PSAT=150...if you multiply 150 by 10, my SAT score should be 1,500... Am I confused?
