The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in SAT/PSAT/ACT.....

Question #13:
  • My son scored in the 88th percentile in the math PSAT. Would he benefit from taking the math SAT II ? Who takes the SAT II and for what purpose ?
Answer #13:
  • Some colleges require that applicants submit as many as 3 subject test (SAT II) in addition to the SAT I or ACT. These SAT II tests demonstrate proficiency in specific academic disciplines, such as Foreign Language, Math, English with Writing, History, Biology, and others. Most of the schools requiring this additional level of testing specify that one SAT II should be Math and another should be Writing. Since you do not know which schools will be on your son's college list, it is a good idea to be prepared for any eventuality by taking the SAT II along the way. If he is strong in sciences, he should take Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc, in the same year he finishes each course. Math should be taken at the end of the junior year or at the beginning of the senior year. Other tests should be scheduled to correspond with the maximum learning period for each subject, e.g., as close to course completion as possible. SAT II tests are usually given in October, December, January, May, and June. Each test is one hour long, but you can take as many as 3 different subjects at one sitting. Teachers and prep books are good resources for SAT II review.
