The EDUFAX Educational FAQ
I am interested in RETURNING to school.....
| Question #9: |
- I am a single parent and have worked in a factory to
support my children. Now that they are grown up and independent, I
have the freedom to go to school. Everything I see is for young
people going from high school to college. Where can older people,
who are many years after school, go for help or advice for returning
to school ?
|
| Answer #9: |
-
Start your investigation at a community college close to home. Many
schools have special arrangements for non-traditional age learners.
Some of these include counseling and support for all the academic
and social concerns of older learners. Once you map out a
geographical plan and identify a list of academically suitable
schools, you can start inquiring which schools accommodate older
learners. Statistics have shown that older learners do much better
academically than students of traditional age. Go for it! If you are
nervous about undertaking a degree program, take one course at a
time for a while until you see what you like. Some schools even
offer degree credits for life experience, a system which expedites
the whole process of acquiring your degree. Ask a lot of questions
and weigh the answers carefully to coordinate with your
non-negotiable lifestyle features.
A great deal of research has been done on the subject of
non-traditional learners. You should be able to find some
interesting material describing the experience of going back to
school on the web or in the library.
Good Luck!
