The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in RETURNING to school.....

Question #3:
  • What steps should an adult who has worked for several years, but never attended college, take to get a college degree ?
Answer #3:
  • If you are planning to work while you attend school, start taking courses at a community college. You can even take courses at a four-year college as a non-matriculated student for a semster to see how the level is for you. If you are academically comfortable, you can later petition to have your non-matric courses factored into your accepted coursework.
Try to find out if there is a branch of your State education system which gives tests for life experiences and assigns college credit to them. In Connecticut, for instance, this is called Charter Oak College. You can also take the CLEP tests -- exams for which you study independently to exempt yourself from certain basic level courses. These approaches will save you time and money.
Find out what requirements the schools in your area ask of their applicants and prepare for the standardized testing. There are also many weekend and evening programs geared for adult learners that are sometimes easier to fit into your schedule. If you want this degree, the obstacles can be overcome. Good Luck !! (by way of GOCOLLEGE).
EDUFAX provides services for the Adult/Non-Traditional/Re-entry Student.
