The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in RETURNING to school.....

Question #28:
  • I am 32 years old. I have a transcript that is a decade old from my jock/party college days. It is killing my current grade point average and does not reflect my present ability as a strong A & B student. My SAT scores are respectable. Is it possible to "drop" a transcript after 10 years or must we "pay for the sins of our youth forever"?
Answer #28:
  • If you plan on including the credits from the grades you earned in your "former life style" toward the completion of your degree, then I'm afraid that the excesses of youth will continue to torment your transcript.
It is possible to ask your registrar if you can use a retroactive Pass/Fail option for some of the courses which are pulling down your GPA. It is highly unlikely that you will be judged by the earlier part of your transcript, whether you are headed for the world of work or for graduate school.
In either case, however, you will have to explain it and show how you have changed. You may be surprised to learn that it can actually work in your favor as living proof of your growth and maturity.
EDUFAX provides services for the Adult/Non-Traditional/Re-entry Student.
