The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in RETURNING to school.....

Question #27:
  • I am 21 years old. I was dismissed from one college after the first year and placed on academic probation at a second college. I returned home after the first semester because of financial difficulties. I was unsuccessful at a local community college, again for academic reasons. I really want to resume my education. It is the first thing on my mind when I wake up and the last thing on my mind before I go to sleep. My fear is that I will not be able to find a college that will accept me because of my academic record. What is your advice?
Answer #27:
  • I think it is important for you to investigate why you are having problems with academics and time management. Have you ever had an educational evaluation? Perhaps you have a learning disability which is sabotaging your efforts to study. If you do, you could learn to compensate for it or have the college help you set up accommodations so that you could succeed when you return to school. Perhaps a reduced course load or careful attention to course selection would help you succeed.
I think it is encouraging that you still want to learn despite the hardships you have encountered. That proves that you have an eager and determined mind. There are many colleges which offer second and even third chances to students who have true intellectual curiosity.
If I were you, however, I would not return to school without having a full psychoeducational evaluation. You can probably find out how to do this at the community college you last attended. Call the Office of the Academic Dean, the Learning Resource Center, or the Counseling Center, and see if they can refer you for educational testing.
Once you know how you learn, you can put your best efforts to work.
EDUFAX provides services for the Adult/Non-Traditional/Re-entry Student.
