The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in RETURNING to school.....

Question #24:
  • I have turned 50. I now want to return to college. I had one semester in junior college from way back in 1968. I would like to become a school librarian. How do I start?
Answer #24:
  • Research has shown that returning learners are usually the best students in their classes, and I'm sure you'll prove the research true.
Make a list of the schools within a reasonable geographical area for you. Investigate their web sites and ask if they have any special admissions programs for returning students. Look through all the information in the program you want and make sure it meets your needs.
Usually, librarians need a Master's degree, but some can begin to work in library settings before completing the Master's in Library Science. If it will make things easier for you, you can take a few classes at a community college before jumping into the larger pool. It is more comfortable when a school is easy to navigate.
Find out what standardized testing is required for admission to the schools you are considering, and buy a book or a computer-based prep course to familiarize yourself with the content and structure of the tests. Use the power specialized search engine available through the EDUFAX site to check out the selection available on the 'Net.
Then take a deep breath and go for it!
EDUFAX provides services for the Adult/Non-Traditional/Re-entry Student.
