The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am an INTERNATIONAL, FOREIGN STUDENT interested in applying to an American college.....

Question #9:
  • I failed the Analytical Writing part of the GMAT. Will the admissions committee take into consideration the fact that I am a foreign born student ?
Answer #9:
  • There are no special accommodations made when scoring the GMAT for people whose mother tongue is not English. The rationale is that if you can't reach a certain level of English expertise, you will not be able to do the work in the graduate program. Your score on the TOEFL, however, can affect a committee's consideration of your application. Also, there are some graduate schools which are willing to be a bit more flexible in their admissions policies and others which go strictly by the numbers. You should contact a wide range of schools before you decide where to apply.
For more information on the GMAT and on the importance of the Analytical Writing Section, contact the Educational Testing Service.
