The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am an INTERNATIONAL, FOREIGN STUDENT interested in applying to an American college.....

Question #21:
  • I am a high school student in Singapore. How do I start the application process to an American university and when and where should I take the SAT or ACT? (courtesy Valerie Ting, Singapore)
Answer #21:
  • In order to begin school at an American university in the fall, students generally have to have their applications complete by the previous January or February. If you plan to enter university without a break after high school, you should begin the information and application process well before you complete your final matriculation exams.
You should take the SAT or ACT 12 to 18 months before your proposed entry to university in America. The American Embassy in your country should be able to tell you where these tests are given. You can also contact the ACT or the SAT at their web sites and receive specific information from them regarding dates, international locations and testing fees. If you take these tests early, you may have enough time to repeat them in case you need to improve your scores.
Do some preliminary research in college guides and school publications. Examine the websites of colleges which interest you. Then identify several schools which seem to fit your criteria for academics, level of competitiveness, location, and size and contact their Admissions Offices by e-mail. Find out which requirements or accommodations apply to international students and what grants are available to you. You can find the home pages and email addresses of the admissions offices of all (yes ALL!) the universities and colleges in the USA through the EDUFAX site.

    International Applicant.
