The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in a PRIVATE, BOARDING, or INDEPENDENT SCHOOL.....

Question #4:
  • Is there a ranking of boarding schools?
Answer #4:
  • Luckily for boarding schools, they are not ranked in the same way as colleges in the US are ranked (or should I say in the US News and World Report ?!). Education professionals, however, know that it is not as easy to be accepted at Exeter, for example, as it is at St.Gertrude High School. Nevertheless, both schools offer curriculum challenges to their students.
SSAT cutoffs might indicate which schools are more academically selective, but numerical evaluations do not consider all the life style features which make one school wonderful for a particular student and another less so. The match of student to school is a critically important factor. For example, a student interested in an equestrian program might consider one of the most rigorously academic schools a poor match because there is no riding.
Enjoy your time in the school you select, and consider yourself lucky to benefit from the challenge of a private education. Even the best public schools often have to cram 28 students in a math class. In a 45 minute period, that gives each student about 1.6 minutes of individual teacher time. Most private schools keep classes and faculty-student ratios small and manageable.
