The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in a PRIVATE, BOARDING, or INDEPENDENT SCHOOL.....

Question #21:
  • My daughter is thinking of transferring from the Ethel Walker School, CT, to the Millbrook School in Millbrook, NY. I have no way of knowing if Millbrook has a better academic reputation than Ethel Walker. Can you help? I know that it is not something that can be precisely measured but are there any test score comparisons that give some insight?
Answer #21:
  • Although there is no publication which ranks independent schools, you can do some research to give you a feel of the academic levels of the two schools you are considering. Ask both schools the following questions and then compare the answers:
    1. What is the average SSAT score or range of accepted students?
    2. Have you had any commended students, semi-finalists or Merit scholars recently on the PSAT/NMSQT?
    3. May I see a list of last year's graduates and the colleges they attended?
    4. How many AP courses do you offer?
    5. What is the average composite SAT I score of your college applicants?
    6. How many students are in an average class?
    7. If your daughter has a special interest, ask about resources in that area.
Then compare the two schools and you will have an idea of which one is best for her. Remember that in a boarding school, there are also social considerations to factor in. Walker's is all girls and Millbrook is coed, which might be important to your daughter.
You should also ask about how each school handles study hall, academic support, and extracurricular programs.
When you see the full picture each school has to offer, you will be able to make an informed decision.
