The EDUFAX Educational FAQ
I am interested in GRADUATE SCHOOL.....
| Question #42: |
- I am applying to graduate school in the area of
Sociology. My grades are excellent, but my GRE scores are horrible.
Are there any schools that do not put an emphasis on the GRE?
(courtesy Nichole Tortoris, Indian Wells, CA)
|
| Answer #42: |
- Every school has a different system for evaluating grades,
standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, relevant
extracurricular experience, essays, and personal interviews. You
would have to contact the schools which interest you and ask
specifically what emphasis they place on standardized test scores.
You might even find several schools which allow you to substitute
the Miller Analogies Test, a format which might be easier for you
than the GRE. You'll need to spend some time on the phone, or you
can access the schools through the Internet.
If you have trouble with multiple choice exams, it is possible that
you have a learning disability which prevents you from showing your
true capabilities in this format. It might be worthwhile to undergo
an educational evaluation. If a problem is found, you could explain
to the graduate schools that the standardized test scores are not a
relevant indicator of your academic potential.
