The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in GRADUATE SCHOOL.....

Question #40:
  • I am graduating in Political Sciences from Howard University with a GPA=3.54. I am interested in Sports Sociology. What are the best schools in this subject? (courtesy Amber Hamilton, Colonia, NJ)
Answer #40:
  • Graduate programs specifically dealing with Sports Sociology are hard to find, but with your credentials, you should not have too much trouble getting into a graduate program in Sociology . Before you commit to any graduate program, you would have to investigate their philosophy, training, and requirements. Even where Sports Sociology is not specifically identified, you could use your coursework and research to pursue your individual interests.
In addition to graduate departments in Sociology, I suggest that you also look into graduate schools in Applied Health Sciences, which might offer you an "in" through their Sports Medicine programs. You should also investigate graduate programs in Physical Education, many of which use Sports Sociology and Sports Psychology to help teachers understand how to motivate students and athletes.
Identify the locations you like, make a list of competitive schools, and then start investigating like crazy. Don't worry about annoying anyone - it is their job to keep prospective students informed.
Prepare for the GRE; it is a little bit different than the SAT.
I think you have a good chance of getting into a program which deals with Sports Sociology - it is a new and growing field which is very exciting. Perhaps I will see you on ESPN one day discussing the behaviors of professional athletes!
