The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in GRADUATE SCHOOL.....

Question #24:
  • I am having trouble composing my personal essay. I am interested in a Masters in Education with a Teacher Certification. Can you refer me to any internet resources? I graduated from Vassar with a English/Psychology double major. GPA=3.4, GRE=690 Verbal, 590 Quan., 600 Analytical. Do I have a shot? (courtesy Lori J. Becker, Somerville, MA)
Answer #24:
  • You definitely have a shot -- you have a respectable GPA from a fine college and your GRE scores are well above the median. Unfortunately, there are no places you can access to see personal statements, since the information they contain is so, well, personal. However, if you approach this project as if it were a term paper, you might be able to get organized and be productive. Find a thesis statement (your philosophy, ideals, etc.), support it with experiences and beliefs, and conclude by showing that you have been a teacher all your life, but understand that it is now necessary to formalize your talents so that you can have access to professional placement.
If you are doing so well at Vassar, I am certain you can tackle the next step.
