I am interested in GRADUATE SCHOOL..... =================================================================
Question #22:
  • I am interested in a Ph.D. in English. My GRE scores are decent but my undergraduate GPA is low (2.88) with embarassly low fourth year grades and a 'D' in English. Should I enroll in a program to improve my GPA or do I have a shot at a graduate program?
Answer #22:
  • Were there any extenuating circumstances, such as illness or family problems, that caused your low grades? Graduate programs are very concerned about students being able to do sustained scholarly research, so they get nervous when they see erratic scores. Also, it would be quite logical for them to ask why a student who got a D in English wants to do graduate work in that subject. Your best bet is to speak to the Graduate Admissions Officers at the schools which interest you and ask them how they would relate to a transcript like yours. Be honest. If they tell you that you are not a good candidate at this time, take some courses as a non-matriculated graduate student and show them that you are serious about your work.
