The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in GRADUATE SCHOOL.....

Question #16:
  • After a 20 year business career, I am interested in pursuing a Master's degree. I took the GRE and scored low. Should I retake the test or look for a school that will accept me without the GRE? (courtesy Pressley Smith, Charlotte, NC)
Answer #16:
  • If you do not spend time preparing for the GRE, do not retake the test. However, if you can take some classes or practice tests which will help you understand your strengths and weaknesses, you might be able to raise your scores and have the option of applying to a wider range of schools.
Some schools will accept you without the GRE, and ask that you prove your capability through your grades and academic contributions. Others have provisional acceptance programs, which delay matriculation until you have proved your academic ability. If such a program exists in your area, it might be easier to enroll conditionally than to prepare for the GRE.
There are also graduate schools which accept alternate testing, such as the Miller Analogies Test, instead of the GRE. Look at a prep book to decide which type of standardized test is better for your academic strengths.
EDUFAX provides services for the Graduate School Applicant.
