I heard that colleges prefer an applicant who gets B's and C's in honor courses over one who achieves A's in regular classes.

Answer #93:

A challenging curriculum is usually one of the first things a college considers when appraising an applicant's file. The colleges know exactly how a B in an AP course compares to an A in a regular course. Grades of C or lower are not particularly impressive on either level.
