The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #90:
  • My SAT I scores are brilliant, but my SAT II score in Writing is 470. I have brilliant recommendations and brilliant everything... Will I be rejected from the competitive colleges ?
Answer #90:
  • I can practically assure you that you will neither be rejected nor ignored on the basis of one score. The SAT II Writing Test is, however, extremely important, since it shows admissions officials how you can organize and communicate your thoughts. If your essay is well written, the admissions committee will probably attribute less importance to the SAT II score. Remember that most highly competitive colleges require three SAT II subject tests.
You could also write a letter stating that it isn't your ideal outcome and include a graded paper to demonstrate your writing skills (a copy - never the original - but with teacher comments and a grade).
Finally, you should consider working with a tutor or consultant who can drill you in the mechanics of writing a convincing essay. Then you can take the Writing test again. I once had a student who practiced and practiced and finally achieved a perfect 800! Don't be disheartened. Get busy and let your other achievements override your first SAT II Writing attempt.
EDUFAX provides services for the Collegebound High School Student.
