The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #89:
  • One semester average in Advanced Geometry in my freshman year was a B. This year I got a B in Advanced Algebra II. Right now my GPA is 3.87. Do you think I have a chance of getting into one of the top 10 schools ? (courtesy Erin Simmons, Kent, OH)
Answer #89:
  • It is important to show the colleges how you have distinguished yourself as a human being. Most of the students who apply to the top colleges have already self-selected; they have similar grades and test scores. The students who have taken initiative, who have donated time to productive projects, who have artistic or athletic talent and have parlayed it into recognized excellence, who have thought creatively and have made a difference in the lives of people in their communities - these are the candidates who are considered most desirable in admissions offices.
Don't join hundreds of clubs and sit passively. Find a cause and be an active supporter and leader. Make a change that benefits your school, your town, etc. Your semester averages in Math are a tiny piece of the whole file you will present when you apply. Those B's will fade into the background if you can prove that you will be a valuable member of your college class and your college community.
