The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #61:
  • I am entering my senior year at high school and do not have any idea about what my major in college should be. Do you have any pointers on how to chose a college major?
Answer #61:
  • More than 75% of entering college freshmen do not have any idea of what to major in. In your freshman year and in the beginning of your sophomore year, you may fall in love with courses in fields you never even heard of in high school, such as paleoanthropology, comparative literature, etc. In order to choose the correct major, you need to identify a subject you enjoy which has job possibilities that interest you, and which is in an area where you have reasonable academic talent. For example -- don't choose physics as your major if you can't add two and two without breaking out in hives!
Think about your talents, your values, the kinds of people you enjoy being with, the workplace settings you like and the things you enjoy doing. A combination of all the above should give you some direction concerning a good choice of major.
You can also take some standardized testing such as the MBTI or Strong to find out if there are career-oriented patterns in the things you generally like to do. (Ask you guidance counselor or contact EDUFAX.) There are also lots of books available to help you assess you skills and interest. You can find a link to such Books on the EDUFAX site.
In some colleges, you can double-major, or take a major and a minor. Keep an open mind, and you will find out what you want to do. Don't be worried about not deciding yet. You have plenty of time!
