The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #157:
  • Do you consider it worthwhile for a junior in high school to visit colleges during junior year?
Answer #157:
  • Although many things can change from one year to the next, I believe that it is wise to start visiting colleges during junior year.
There are many advantages to early visits. Since the college decision is not so pressing, prospective students are open to many different experiences. There is also more time to look at schools, talk to students on campus and have interviews. Even a visit to a campus which is ultimately rejected helps students define what they are looking for as far as size, student body, academic level, location, and campus or urban site. Preconceived notions can be confirmed or dismissed.
After carefully reviewing information gathered from junior year visits, a student can narrow down the possibilities and choose a few schools for overnight visits at the beginning of senior year.
Junior visits are also wonderful for students who are considering applying early decision, since their completed applications will be due in November.
Have fun seeing schools and don't turn every campus visit into a military inspection. Try to understand the personality and ambiance of each school as well as its academic offerings. At the very worst, you could acquire quite an eclectic collection of college T-shirts. At best, you just might find the school of your dreams!
