The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #152:
  • Why do some private schools rank their students and others do not? (courtesy Katherine L. Davis, Swan Quarter, NC)
Answer #152:
  • Most private schools do not rank their students academically. The general rationale is that they are not interested in having their students appear to be competing against one another. Instead, the schools prefer to present the idea of a united, strong class. Since most private schools graduate smaller classes than public schools, more of a family atmosphere is encouraged. Frankly, the policy of not ranking class members effectively removes some of the hyper-competitive, back-biting tactics that often appear in schools where students vie competitively for the first, second and third spots.
Since most college admissions representatives are familiar with policies at each of the schools in their catchment areas, you should not be concerned about the issue of ranking. The representatives should be able to assess the student's intellectual capabilities whether or not his or her school uses a specific ranking system.
