The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #150:
  • I am a sophomore. My GPA=2.72. I'm afraid I've put myself out of the college race. Do I have any hope of going to college? What can I do to improve my performance?
Answer #150:
  • The journey to college is not a race. For some, it is a long walk with some interesting sidetrips. I agree that your current GPA would not cause a flurry of excitement in a room full of admissions officers. But you are a work in progress and you definitely have a chance to enhance your presentation before it is time to submit your college applications.
First of all, do everything you can to increase your GPA. Use your junior year as a showcase to demonstrate your highest academic potential. Get organized and make a commitment to serious study. If you have an opportunity to take AP courses and are willing to work at such an advanced level, you should certainly do so. Success in an AP class will definitely prove to institutions of higher learning that you are ready for college level coursework.
Choose some extracurricular activities which interest you. Don't join clubs or organizations just to make your resume look good. Join because you really want to make a difference.
The junior year is the one which colleges scrutinize most closely. If you can truly show that you have changed your ways and seriously resolve to be a committed, active member of your student body, you have a chance of finding a school which will offer you the opportunity for a wonderful education.
