The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #112:
  • My GPA=2.83, I take 2 AP classes, a college class, 2 honors classes and am very athletic. In the past I have been lazy and my ACT=26, my SAT Verbal=630, SAT Math=490. I live in California. What are my chances of being accepted in an out-of-state college ?
Answer #112:
  • There are many schools which will be happy to accept you, although high testing and low GPA can indicate an academic problem, late maturation, laziness, or lack of focus. However, the schools which will accept you now might not be as challenging as you would like. Why do you want to leave the California system which offers some of the best and lowest-priced educations in the US? Perhaps you can't be accepted to Berkeley with the grades you have now, but if you excel during a year or two at an community college, you are automatically eligible for the UC which is closest to your academic level.
Another possibility is to take a PG year at a prep school before applying to college. Some prep schools offer this thirteenth year for students who want to polish their skills to have the option for more competitive colleges. Talk to your guidance counselor about some post-secondary options that could pay off for you. You can also contact EDUFAX and get information regarding assistance with PG-13 selection and placement.
I would also suggest doing some prep work to bring up your SAT Math score at least into the mid 500's.
EDUFAX provides services for the Collegebound High School Student.
