The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #106:
  • I have good SAT & ACT scores (SAT=1220, ACT=32), but a low GPA (3.4/5.0). I am taking four AP classes in my senior year. What are my chances of getting into a good school?
Answer #106:
  • First of all, I don't know what you mean by a "good school". There are schools at all levels of competitiveness which are considered "good" and even "excellent". If you are thinking about the Ivy League schools, I don't think your presentation will be competitive enough. Your ACT score is very good and your SAT score is fine. However, Ivy League schools usually do not consider applicants with SAT scores under 1400 unless there is evidence of some outstanding extracurricular activity.
Most colleges look at the GPA before they consider the SAT/ACT scores. They will want to know where and why you fell down. Were there any special circumstances affecting your early years in high school? Have you consistently gone up, or are the grades mixed?
You have a wonderful chance to show your stuff by succeeding in your four AP classes. It is a great idea to take AP courses, but remember that they are quite difficult. Colleges love students who take a challenging senior year curriculum, but they also want to see success. You'll have to score no lower than a B. Remember that the admissions officers will only see your first semester grades (unless you are wait-listed).
For now, if I were you, I would concentrate on pulling up your GPA. You might also consider taking the SAT I again, after some thorough math and verbal preparation.
There are all kinds of good universities. I'm sure you'll find the one that will challenge and excite you. More important than a "name brand" is a school which is a good match for your personality and learning style. Careful investigation should give you many options.
