The EDUFAX Educational FAQ

I am interested in COLLEGE.....

Question #100:
  • My school is small and rather unimpressive. AP courses classes are not offered. I have taken the toughest schedule, including honors level courses, but I believe that my transcript does not match up with records of students from larger and wealthier schools. My SAT=1440, my GPA=3.98. Will my small school background hold me back?
Answer #100:
  • Your small school will not hold you back as long as you can show that your achievements are at the top of your class. Since you do not have AP classes, have you considered setting up an independent study or petitioning to take a class at a local college or community college? Schools like to see initiative.
Prepare a detailed resume of your activities and make sure the colleges know what you have accomplished in addition to your grades and test scores. Take great care with your application essay to prove that you can develop an idea and present it with creativity and competence. Such a challenge should be a breeze for a student like you. Regional representatives are intimately familiar with the high schools in their recruitment areas. They will expect only that you are the best you can be at your own school, not at anyone else's.
