June - Grade 11
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Juniors -- Even though it seems that the school year is almost over,
June is a busy time for pre-college testing. The SAT I, SAT II, and
the ACT are all given this month. (You can call for your results or
have them mailed to you during vacation; the testing centers work
year round.) Before you leave school for the summer, ask your
guidance counselor to confirm the courses you have chosen for senior
year. A surprise in September is always harder to untangle than a
jumble in June. Ask your guidance counselor or educational
consultant to help you plan your college visits. Will you have time
to travel in the fall or does your extracurricular schedule bind you
to home fields? Although you don't get the complete picture by
visiting schools in the summer, many colleges offer summer school
programs which can give you a fairly accurate idea of what the
campus is like. It's helpful to see students on campus and classes
in session. During the summer, you should write to schools which
interest you to request their catalogues and application materials.
Visit college websites and download their applications to
familiarize yourself with essay topics. If you can jumpstart the
application process before autumn, you should have a relatively
stress-free first semester. Most important, remember that school
doesn't end until your last assignment in your last class is
completed. Junior year grades elicit extreme scrutiny in college
admission offices. Make sure your junior grades don't take a sudden
slump before the summer solstice.

June - Grade 12
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Seniors -- Be gentle to the juniors who are mired in standardized
testing and school selection. If you have finalized your college
choice, study the academic catalog and make a list of courses you
would like to take next fall. Some colleges schedule optional early
registration sessions for freshmen so that you don't have to fight
the crowds. Make an effort to attend. This is a wonderful
opportunity to hear about classes, to talk to other incoming
freshmen and compare notes, and to start thinking about your college
career. It's also a great time to buy your college sweatshirt in the
bookstore and avoid the September rush.
Try to visit a typical freshman room so that you know what to bring.
Grandma's old nine-foot sofa may be terrifically comfortable, but it
probably won't fit into the dorm. Enjoy every moment of your
graduation ceremony -- even the long-winded speeches and silly
traditions. You are about to embark on a new period of life.
Congratulate yourself and your friends for completing the previous
one successfully. Thank the teachers you liked and be gracious to
the others. Appreciate your parents and give them a copy of Letting
Go : A Parents' Guide to Understanding the College Years, by Karen
Levin Coburn and Madge Lawrence Treeger. Remember one formula for
the future -- if your party time exceeds your study time, you need
to re-evaluate the decision to attend college! Have a wonderful
journey!
